We have Abba’s back catalogue, a Greek island, a wedding, a mother and daughter and three possible father’s so what show do we have? Yes of course it’s the smash hit musical Mamma Mia! This colourful show requires no brain work but to just simply sit back, enjoy and to try and guess which Abba song is coming up next.
Sophie’s (Lucy May Barker) quest to discover the father she’s never known brings her mother (Sara Poyzer) face to face with three men (Christopher Hollis, Richard Standing and Tim Walton) from her distant romantic past on the eve of a wedding they’ll never forget.

Based on the songs from Abba this well-known jukebox musical is full of cheesy fun. The colours of the costumes and clever use of lighting transports you to a Greek island, which instantly radiates a warmth into the already enthusiastic audience.

This large energetic cast are charismatic and exuberant in all their scenes. Comic timing in delivery of their lines along with sharp, crisp movement and choreography gives for an effervescent and infectious audience experience.

Particularly strong vocal performances were provided by Sara Poyzer, Lucy May Barker, Christopher Hollis, Richard Standing and Tim Walton. My favourite songs of the night were amongst others Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!, Money,Money,Money and Super Trouper. Jacqueline Braun as Rosie really did have us laughing at her antics, clearly comedy is a real forte for her.

This musical has been in the West End for many years now and the fact that it is now also successfully touring is testament not only to the immense energy of the whole cast but the obvious appeal of a generation brought up on the music of Abba. Continuing to wow audiences and encourage young and old alike to enjoy this iconic Swedish Group’s songs, it really is a feel good show.
To summarise if you fancy a night on a Greek island with vivacious choreography, spectacularly colourful costumes and love the music of Abba then what are you waiting for? Book your ticket today to see this tour at the Mayflower until 8th October or at a town near you soon!
But beware make sure you have your dancing shoes at the ready, because you’ll be doing your best “Dancing Queen” impersonation by the end of the night.
