Review: The Grand Expedition by Gingerline

The Grand Expedition by Gingerline

Review by Caroline Hanks-Farmer

This review will be brief – why, to keep the mystery alive of the experience that is The Grand Expedition. Part dance spectacle, part multimedia simulation, part supper club, it’s billed as a “floating, feeding, falling dream”, featuring five interactive courses paired with eccentric performance and storytelling – basically it’s a five course gastronomic  journey throughout the land.

It’s really hard to write something about an event that is so indescribable because of its uniqueness. On the day or the night before, if it’s a matinée, you are sent a text with the specific location of the event. The fact that it is secret adds to the anticipation of the evening. Once inside the venue any preconceptions are shattered. Your sensory organs are driven to overload as you absorb proceedings.

This is a really sociable affair and I would say it’s essential that you have a great table, fortunately we had just that. Easy to make friends and great to discuss where you think the next course might just take you in the grand expedition?

I particularly liked the fact that my dietary needs were catered for and I felt safe that I wasn’t going to be ill. The staging with use of projection, really did make you feel like you were on a journey which was interesting and innovative to watch. Its actors remained in character throughout. I’ve always steered away from immersive theatre but this has changed my perception. It’s high quality, attention to detail and visual effects meant that you continue to think about it for days after.

The next tranche of tickets go on sale early March and I would encourage you and a group of friends to book yourself an experience of The Grand Expedition – you won’t regret it.
