Review by Caroline Hanks-Farmer
Ok so we’ve already published a review for Evita by Bella Stone which you can check out on the site. However I also went to see Evita this week. There’s not much I can add about Emma Hatton’s powerhouse of a performance that hasn’t been said already. I was also impressed with Kevin Stephen-Jones portrayal of Perón which seemed to have a lot more depth to other productions I’ve seen. Another standout performance for me with her solo song Another Suitcase In Another Hall was Sarah O’Conner as the mistress. Her pure clear voice was just an absolute delight. Ché played by Gian Marco Schiaretti had charisma and added to the show well with his vocal talents and undisputed stage presence.
However what struck me having seen the show many times before, is that this production seems to be a lot darker. It gave a depth that enticed me to find out more about Eva Perón and her life.
The music or possibly the vocals at times could have benefited from toning down in areas to demonstrate light and dark better. But this is just a personal taste. This with a couple of very small other points, which slightly irked me, meant that I didn’t feel I could personally award it the full five stars.
Evita
Returning to the beginning, the night quite rightly belonged to Hatton who appeared to be channeling her inner Elaine Paige. Slight of stature but big on vocals, her whole persona demonstrating what an immensely talented leading lady she is. The scene, where we witness her dying, could be felt and certainly had more impact than I’ve ever believed it to have before.
So there you have it two reviews, one the full five stars and one four star. Whilst we may not agree on the rating we do absolutely agree that this show is a triumph for a revival and you should definitely catch it now in its West End short run.
