CCADS Theatre
Presents
DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS
Followers of CarnsTheatrePassion.com will know we usually cover just professional shows. Consequently as CCADS stands for Corpus Christi Amateur Dramatic Society, you might be wondering why suddenly we are promoting them? Simply because, this is one company whose productions are anything but amateur. Furthermore John-Paul McCrohon Artistic Director of CCADS Theatre is also highly respected and influential in the local scene, providing consistently high quality and innovative productions. McCrohon has also taught many now professional actors while they attended South Downs College. One former student, Paul Wilkins, is currently playing Marius in Les Miserables, London. I recently interviewed Wilkins who made reference to his former lecturer McCrohon. Read on to find out more about their forthcoming production.
Multi award-winning CCADS Theatre will make a welcome return to The Kings Theatre in March, with the local premiere of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. This production follows their highly acclaimed, sold-out production of ‘Cats’. The hilariously funny smash-hit West End and Broadway musical comedy can be seen 16th – 18th March. A show which certainly seems like another sure-fire hit, with audiences.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, is based on the hugely popular MGM film starring Michael Caine & Steve Martin. We journey to the French Riviera for high jinks and hilarity. Also highly sophisticated, suave and with a good dash of mischief. And a hysterically funny comedy, which features a delightfully jazzy score by David Yazbek (The Full Monty). Nominated for a staggering 11 Tony Awards on Broadway in addition to its recent smash-hit West End run that starred Robert Lindsay & Rufus Hound.

Synopsis
Two con men, a beautiful woman and the elite of the French Riviera collide in this sexy and irreverent farce.
Lawrence Jameson (John-Paul McCrohon) makes his lavish living by talking rich ladies out of their money. While Freddy Benson (Pete Westmorland) swindles women with fabricated stories about his grandmother’s failing health. Consequently after meeting on a train, they attempt to work together. Quickly it seems like this small French town really isn’t big enough for the two of them. They agree on a settlement: the first one to extract $50,000 from a young female target, heiress Christine Colgate (Lauren Kempton), wins while the defeated must leave town. A hilarious battle of cons ensues that will keep audiences laughing, humming and guessing to the end … .
Backed by a full orchestra and performed on stunning sets, this show is full of song, dance and humour and features a cast of the area’s finest, award-winning talents. As a result CCADS, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels promises a laugh out loud funny, tuneful and visually spectacular night of entertainment.
The con is on …………!
CCADS Artistic Director John-Paul McCrohon once again takes on double duties. Fresh from the recent Curtain Call award wins as Best Director of a Musical and Best Actor in a Musical for ‘Into the Woods’. McCrohon both directs and acts in this production. McCrohon plays Lawrence Jameson and follows in the illustrious footsteps of David Niven, Michael Caine, John Lithgow, Jonathan Pryce and Robert Lindsay. There are many award-winners and nominees included within the cast. Amongst which are Pete Westmorland, Lauren Kempton, Danny Owen, Kerry McCrohon and Charlotte Thomas.
The creative team is completed by Louise Helyer a recent ‘Best Musical Director’ award winner. Along with the same ‘Cats’ choreography team of Lydia Thorne and Charlotte Williams.
In addition to undergoing intensive rehearsal, the cast have also been actively promoting the show. Most noteworthy, was a special event in collaboration with one of Southsea’s hottest new venues, Café au Cinema. Leading cast members performed numbers from the show, prior to introducing a screening of the original film. Also attending a special photo shoot hosted by the Queen’s Hotel.
Following CCADS’ WOW 24/7 ‘Best Production’ award-winner ‘The Ladykillers’, the company is proud to once again bring comedy to the iconic Kings theatre. A theatre that, in bygone years, has housed legendary acts such as Laurel and Hardy, George Formby, Frankie Howerd and Noel Coward to name but a few.
Don’t miss this ravishing show!
This show will appeal to theatregoers as much as non-theatregoers alike. One which has a foot in the screwball musical comedies of yesteryear. As well as a foot raucously and outrageously in the present!
