At the GBS Theatre, RADA, Malet Street – as part of the RADA Festival 2016 RADA ALUMNA ROSES URQUHART BRINGS GROUND-BREAKING CABARET THEATRE TO RADA FESTIVAL

The Night Kitchen Cabaret’s new show, Family Tree, interweaves circus, music, and dance into a split-your-sides funny but deeply poignant story in which East End actress-manageress, Ruby Kitchen, tries to reunite her family. Audiences will be treated to six acts, including levitation, puppetry, and hula-hooping – all tightly woven into a slick, theatrical spectacle. Family Tree is the fifth instalment of boundary-defying multi-disciplinary theatre series The Night Kitchen Cabaret, which is created, written, and directed by RADA alumna Roses Urquhart, in a co-production with RADA, to be premiered at the RADA Festival 2016.

Since NKC’s first outing in 2007, audiences in both London and at festivals across the country have been treated to the surreal and magical domestic life of Ruby and her extraordinary family. Although comedy is the mainstay of Ruby’s world, the company’s shows also tackle darker, more difficult archetypal themes.

Over the years, NKC has brought together seminal performers from a large array of artistic disciplines, showcased within an overarching narrative. The Night Kitchen world also draws inspiration from a range of traditions including Jacobean theatre, pagan ritual, music hall, and the TV sitcom. Urquhart, RADA alumna, is joined by a stellar cast, including actress/aerialist Clare Barrett, actress/musician Jo Bowis, actress Jordon Stevens, musician Paul Frankish, international circus artist Sophie Page Hall, and the leading speciality act of the UK cabaret revival, Mat Ricardo. The creative team includes musical director Paul Frankish (Wicked), movement director Gwyn Emberton (award-winning choreographer and performer), producer Marlena Woodford, and associate director Dave Spencer.

Urquhart says,  “We’re so excited to unite this unique group of people in what is already proving to be an electric combination. Bringing together some of the pioneering artists in the field, Family Tree will be an epic, celebratory pageant reaching to the moon and beyond. Each show is essentially a play
exploring central themes of humanity, love, and family, with cabaret acts ranging from contemporary dance to juggling woven into the action.“

Now in its fifth year, the RADA Festival features 30 different theatre companies performing over 10 days. Urquhart and the NKC team are delighted to be a part of such a wide array of talented artists and to be bringing their unique brand of cabaret theatre to new audiences.
